Liposomes improve drug delivery by enhancing circulation time, targetability, and minimizing toxicity. Their biocompatibility, ease of formulation, ability to load hydrophilic and hydrophobic drugs, and long circulation properties make them successful for clinical use.
Current formulations can be further improved by incorporating biologically active sphingolipids like ceramides. Incorporating ceramide into liposomes improves drug uptake in tumors. Combining anticancer drugs and ceramides in liposomes enhances drug diffusion and reduces multidrug resistance in cancer treatment.
