Prion diseases are rare transmissible diseases affecting humans and animals. Following onset of symptoms, they are always fatal but the pathological mechanisms of disease and how to intervene to stop degeneration are still poorly understood. Therapeutics identified in animal studies have failed to translate into effective treatments in humans. Therefore, to aid discoveries that offer the best chance of therapeutic success in human disease, we developed a human cerebral organoid model of prion infection. This presentation will discuss the model, its advantages and limitations, and how it is being applied to anti-prion therapeutic research.
