Soumyajit Majumdar is Associate Dean Research and Graduate Programs, School of Pharmacy and Professor in the Department of Pharmaceutics and Drug Delivery at The University of Mississippi, USA. He completed his Masters in Pharmaceutical Sciences (Pharmaceutics) from Jadavpur University, India, in 1991, and then his Ph.D. in Pharmaceutical Sciences from the University of Missouri-Kansas City in the year 2005. In between he spent nine years, during the period of 1991 through 2000, in the pharmaceutical industry, working in the field of pharmaceutical manufacturing and formulation development with Sandoz (India), Novartis Enterprises Pvt. Ltd. and Orchid Chemicals and Pharmaceuticals Ltd. He joined The University of Mississippi as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Pharmaceutics in the year 2005.
Majumdar’s primary research area is in the field of ocular drug delivery. He has published widely on parameters affecting drug penetration into the anterior and posterior ocular chambers and is currently studying lipid based colloidal formulation approaches to improve drug penetration into the eye through the topical route. Chemical derivatization and transporter targeting are some of the other approaches under investigation. Overall, his research has been funded through grants received from the National Institutes of Health and several pharmaceutical companies.
